Originally by: Marcus Gideon I've seen several threads start up about Cloaking devices lately. What's the point!?
They are already nerfed for non-Covert Ops use. You crawl through space, and will appear if anything gets too close. And once you do appear, you sit and stare blankly at your enemies for 30 seconds or so before you can react. Covert Ops craft are built specifically to use these devices, and have their own mechanics included making use of them.
What is the problem with these things? - If someone has a hectic lifestyle, and wants to be able to hide while they attend to IRL, who cares? Other games have had similar Stealth mechanics for going AFK.
- If someone is being a spy for the opposition, then they are fulfilling their role in the best manner possible. Spies are a natural part of war. And spies are traditionally weak as compared to the army they are spying upon. That's why Cov Ops aren't huge gunships, and will pop pretty easily if discovered.
- If you're getting distracted in Local, and your gameplay is being affected by someone cloaked and AFK... then you need psychiatric help. Not psychological, because youÆll need some meds. IÆd hate to tell people, but there are also some Secure cans in the local belts, and theyÆre talking about you behind your back. Who cares if theyÆre AFK, as I stated before they canÆt attack you with anything useful for 30 seconds. Bombers can hurt, yes. But thatÆs their purpose. Next youÆll complain Freighters need nerfed because they are carrying too much. Or Interceptors are going too fast. DonÆt knock a class of ship because itÆs good at its job.
Considering how the Overview and sensors work, Cloaks are the only viable means of hiding from people. If combat relied more on actually seeing your opponent, instead of their name on a listà then cover and concealment would be more useful. IÆd be willing to spy from behind a moon or asteroid, if either would actually hide me and stop incoming fire. Since they donÆt, IÆll go *whoosh* and cruise along at 7m/s.
I am quoting the entire post because it should be ******* stickied! All people should be forced to read it and accept is as truth before they come here whining about "changin' cloaking" because their favorite ratting spot is cloakcamped, or they failed to locate a target before he cloaked.
A lession for you noobs. Once upon a time there was no cloaking. People used alts in cheap frigates or rookieships to scout. There were cries of "nerf alts" in these very forums. Now we have very few crying about alts, and more crying about cloaking. Same thing, new name, same thing.
I am personally tired of arguing against changing the cloaking device. I think it was poorly implemented to begin with, but it is FAR too late to change it as people have gotten used to "it being the way it is". Same thing with the whole "local chat" debate, and the various "OMG unnerf/nerf ship X"-threads...
Think ahead. Dont think about yourself or your character. Think about the little things that make the game harder to play for everyone. Like the fact that science jobs default to the #1 corp hangar constantly. Or how about the way the default EVE installation does not include a "no brackets" overview for laggy situtations?
I know there are workarounds for anything, but making the game better for new players benefits everyone who cares about the game.
Arguing endlessly about cloaking, local, this and that draws attention away from actual ideas and on to what is essentially "lobbyism".
So everyone who has an idea that is already outlined in the "frequently posted ideas"-thread should **** off to Jita speakers corner and mingle with the "polititians".
The rest of us, fair and impartial idea-freaks can stay and come up with truely imginative ideas, or suggestions for improvement that wont require a complete re-code of everything.
